When Dan DeQuille wrote for the Territorial Enterprise of Virginia City fame, back in the 19th century, he used this depiction of a braying, angry, miner's burro. He always called it, as did most of the prospectors of the day, "A Washoe Canary." Below are some of our brayings -- that is, Washoe Canary Songs.

Socialism Is Rampant In

Washington Right Now

Many Generations Will Be

Paying For This Mess

by Johnny Gunn

Numbers from the Obama administration are flying thicker than mosquitoes in a bayou, and it is impossible to even attempt to conjure what might be a final figure in his massive spending spree.  Most of us on the planet today won’t be around to see this deficit paid off.  This kind of spending didn’t even happen when the entire world was at war just 69 years ago.  At some point there will have to be an accounting, many will have to assume accountability, and it would be gratifying if sometime soon a little common sense comes into play in Washington.

The idea that cures all ills is the life blood of the liberal mind, the “progressive” whose salvation is having the government pay for everything.  The only reason this kind of government interference works is because it can print its own money.  California’s ruinous liberal governments of the last 50 years has driven the economy to the point of collapse, and since it can’t print its own money, all those wonderful “progressive” programs are going to dying out.

General Motors, AIG, et al should have been allowed to roll over and play dead, the stimulus packages being spread among the states will probably not lead to “millions” of jobs, and all of us will be paying for this mess for generations.  And now, here comes a full blown Hillary Clinton health care program administered by our second socialist president, Barack Obama.  George W. Bush was the first with his “bail out” of insurance, banking, and mortgage companies.

One must laugh when one hears the term Free Enterprise for it currently means, “we are free to take our company into full blown bankruptcy without fear because uncle sugar will get us out of this jam and we can luxuriate in a big fat bonus.”  The collapse of Enron should have been a huge red flag indicating that business leaders in the largest of the international corporations had run out of ethics.

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at Harvard School of Business when tenured professors are discussing among themselves what the current economic picture is really all about.  That has been a bastion of free enterprise for a long time and it would be shattering to find out they are supporting the socialization of American business, from auto makers to insurance companies to doctors, and hospitals.

The next congress is sure to bring up a series of new taxes in order to support what they are gleefully giving away.  How many trees must die in order to print up another five or six trillion dollars?
