The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) says the only reason Utah is complaining about SNWA's attempts to take water from White Pine County is because they (UTAH) wants it in order to promote growth. Oh, my. Now come developers in Lyon County that want to import water from Washoe County in order to promote growth. And Washoe County, already importing water from California neighbors is crying foul. I love it. There is no truth to the rumor that Esmeralda County is looking to build a pipeline from Lake Mead to Goldfield. Political maverick dies --- August 24 marked the death of political maverick Aaron Russo, a man who ran for Nevada Governor, U.S. President, and made films in Hollywood. Russo was a rather young 64 and died from complications from cancer. Russo was a strong state's rights advocate, ran for the job of prez on the Libertarian ticket in 2004, and believed strongly in individual rights. He lost the governorship race in a primary against Kenny Guinn in 1998. Hillary, again, ad nauseum --- This one slipped by just about everyone, or maybe it was withheld by many of those everyones. She has been expounding on her "universal health care" and someone asked why she promotes socialized medicine. Her quote was, "I have never advocated socialized medicine." Whoa, there, former first lady. Do you remember that piece of poo-poo you promoted when the licentious one was prez? I do believe the year was 1993, possibly even before the great right wing conspiracy to do you in, politically. I believe you called that massive piece of social engineering (socialism defined) the "Health Security Act." If, as president, the Health Security Act should become law, Hillary would definitely have a place in the socialist history books. Little boy blue --- University System Chancellor Jim Rogers must be a little difficult to live with, eh? If he doesn't get his way all hell breaks loose. He's withholding a contribution he and his family made to UNR and the System because he was chided during a meeting. Little children do these things, not university chancellors. If a little criticism does this to a man, maybe a little anger management or conflict management schooling is in order. Do it my way, or else went out of style long ago. A sign of the times? --- This is a awkward little piece to write because it shows how governments and corporations aren't that far apart in their thinking. Within two days of each other I received these press releases from Washoe County. 1. We are laying off 12 people because of the current economic situation in Washoe County. Sales tax receipts have been down because of the current housing market slump and we can't afford to keep these people of the payroll. And, 2. Washoe County Manager Katy Singlaub is getting a raise of three percent along with a "bonus". Singlaub to her benefit is donating a part of the bonus to a county employee scholarship fund. If, as county manager, Singlaub felt it necessary to cut out 12 salaries because of economic conditions, why do the commissioners feel it necessary to shove it in our faces and give a raise and a bonus while those same economic conditions exist? And, of course you can be assured that continued rampant growth pays for itself across the board. Bush bash --- The President was in Reno on August 28 to meet with veterans of many wars as the American Legion held its annual bash in Reno. The vets generally welcomed Mr. Bush and listened attentively to his comments. There were some that wished to disrupt the proceedings, but they probably came down from Canada for the event. It was a festive opening to the weeklong event. Governor Jim Gibbons along with the mayors of Reno and Sparks were on hand. Big Al is gone, gone, gone --- Gonzales finally bugged out on those that put their careers on the line in the name of party unity. Or, in the case of the state prosecutors, for doing their job. Dan Bogden will be sorely missed around the Silver State and his end can be spelled politics. Of course, he wasn't the first and won't be the last. It was the Libertarian Party leader that said it best, "Today's resignation by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is a welcomed conclusion to what will be seen as a dark time for justice in America," says Shane Cory, executive director of the Libertarian Party. "We wish Mr. Gonzales the best in any endeavors he pursues outside of government." Florida dems might be in time-out --- Like naughty little children the Florida Democrats have attempted to move their statewide primary up to challenge all those other states that have moved their up. If they don't renege on their move the national party is going to deny admittance to the Florida delegation at the national convention. That's a tough stance but both parties should make those kinds of stances. This run-up to 2008 started months ago, like about two days after the 2006 general elections, and the concept of being "first" now means absolutely nothing. What it means, though, is we may end up having less than stellar candidates from which to choose in November 2008. Right now only the money is talking. Governor loses Brent --- Brent Boynton is leaving the Governor's office having served as his press aide through the campaign and these first months of the term. Boynton says he will be returning to broadcast television news from whence he came to the Gov.'s employ. He will take over the prime time anchor position at Reno's KOLO TV-8 vacated recently by the retirement of long time anchor Tad Dunbar. Best of luck to you, Brent. Where is that dry heat? --- It was just plain wet during that last week of August in Las Vegas. So wet in fact the fire rescue boys and girls saved many from catastrophe. No deaths, and that's the good news. It was a blunt wake up call to new comers in this desert clime to beware of thunderstorms in the summer. Dry washes become raging rivers, low intersections become deep and dangerous lakes, and lightning doesn't necessarily hurt, it kills. Reno could sure use some of that if someone wants to build a pipeline to the north. The Biggest Little City has gone well over 85 days without measurable precip. With that in mind, maybe someone should announce a new housing development. $%2 k"Ch!h2q1OJQJh2q1h B*OJQJphh B*OJQJphh 5OJQJh 5B*CJ0OJQJphh OJQJ$% W A7gk"$a$gd2q1$a$h!s !b!c!g!h!$a$$a$gd2q1(/ =!"#$% H@H Normal CJOJPJQJ_HmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontVi@V Table Normal :V 44 la (k@(No List lOl Style1+ & 0` P@B*CJOJPJQJtH uh*$%W A 7 gk"sbcgj000000000000000000000000000000000000h!h!h!.WWWtW̏WWTW|iWWW0#W6WW_W4W"WWWTWfWWW Wb#WwW"W MW$WăWpW$W+WtxW
