In Britain, New Zealand, and Canada it's spelled Labour Day. In the UK it's celebrated on May First, in New Zealand, on the fourth Monday in October. In Canada, and in the US, it's celebrated on the first Monday in September. Everywhere, it's a day set aside to show respect for and appreciation to, those who labor in all professions. As an exercise, just try to imagine what would happen if everyone who worked at anything were to decide not to do it any more, even if only for a while. Just imagine! None of these people would be doing any work whatsoever: farmers, ranchers, grocers, and mechanics. With no truck drivers, bus drivers, taxi drivers, or gasoline for private vehicles, there'd be no traffic at all. Things would be a mess with no police, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, or nurses to take care of our emergency needs. Schools would close without teachers, and kids would run wild. (Knock it off, kids!) Spiritual and emotional needs would go uncared-for with no rabbis, priests, pastors, or counselors of any sort. Depending upon the weather, we'd all be hot or cold--thirsty--without the services of gas, electric and water workers. We'd be hungry, too. Stores would be closed because there’d be no one to stock the shelves, or to wait on customers. There’d be no money, because all Financial workers (banks, credit unions, ATM attendants) would be lollygaggin' around, doin' nothin'. Even if there were money in the ATMs, you couldn’t get it out because the things need electricity to operate. Settin’ in at Shorty’s Place the other night, he got everyone’s attention when he said, “I’m thinking about closing m'doors here on Labor Day. Maybe take the wife and kids on a picnic or somethin’.” Sioux says, “Good! You lounge lizards also will have to get along without me playing the piano for you, because I won’t be working, either.” The place got deathly quiet. Shorty and Sioux both looked--I thought--somewhat smug. Three truck drivers, seven cowboys, four school teachers, a Safeway clerk, and five members of the clergy, shook their heads in anguish. One of the pastors shouted, “It’s the work of Satan!” Sioux laughed and said, “Sorry, he’s takin’ the day off, too.” Speakin' loudly, so as to be heard above the muttering of all them clergy folks, I says, "Seein' as how I helped Shorty put this place together, I reckon I know enough about how it works to come in and keep the sasparilla flowin'." Over the cheers that followed my announcement, Hardrock Hennesy, a miner from Virginia City, allowed as how he could bring in his hurdy-gurdy to provide some music, and Shorty allowed as how, "That sounds like a heckuva deal." So, to celebrate Labor Day, Shorty and his family get the day off, Sioux goes fishin' up at Pyramid Lake, and Hardrock and I keep Shorty's Place open.
