Nevada History:
["Manhattan," White Pine Notes, Alta California, February 6, 1869] WHITE PINE NOTES. __________ [FROM AN OCCASIONAL CORRESPONDENT OF THE ALTA.] __________ TREASURE CITY, January 31st, 1869. Editors Alta: It commenced snowing yesterday and continued until this morning, together with a sharp southwest wind, which has drifted the snow in many places two or three feet deep, making it very disagreeable getting about, especially between here and Hamilton, as reported by arrivals from there to-day. Snow on the level is about 8 or 10 inches deep. The impression here is we will have deep snow for some months to come. Business of all kinds has been lively here of late, especially building, new stores and restaurants opening daily. Real estate is active and advancing; lots have been sold on the main street, near where the Bank of California contemplate building their bank. For twenty-four hundred dollars; lots 25 feet front by 75 deep, and on back streets, bring from $100 to $600. As to the mines, all I can say is that new discoveries are being made daily of good pay rock, that will run from one hundred up to the thousands per ton. The riches of this district have not been exaggerated; the mines in this district are only in a few instances developed. The impression is that other mines yet to be developed in this district will equal the celebrated Eberhardt, and that you can find good pay rock most anywhere on the hills by sinking from 20 to 30 feet. The greater portion of the inhabitants of this district are like the settlers of all new mining districts — passionately fond of faro and an appreciation of poor whiskey. There was a new dance-house opened here last night, which they call the "hurdy-gurdy," five females and about one hundred males, in the basement of Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express office; they kept up a continual noise, and one or two fights, all night, much to the annoyance of about 40 lodgers over Wells, Fargo & Co.'s office. Yours, etc., MANHATTAN.
