Nevada History:
[Joseph Tyson, White Pine Projects, Alta California, January 6, 1869]
WHITE PINE PROJECTS. __________ Colonel Tyson, writing to A. S. Gould, of this city, from Treasure City, White Pine, under date of December 28th, 1868, says: The snow is deep and the weather terribly cold. There are numerous oases of pneumonia; one man died last night from exposure; not a single person has escaped the severe effects of the rigorous climate. Every one I meet barks at me, and I bark at every one. Fully one third of the population of this city cannot speak above a whisper. My fighting partner, even, is sick. There has been much excitement in regard to a discovery about half a mile south of the Eberhardt. Parties were prospecting there for the past three months, but nothing was found until the other day, when chloride ore resembling the Eberhardt was found. The whole surface is now spotted with holes and locations, not ten feet apart. I suppose as many as five thousand people have been on the ground within the last week. The claims look well, but what they really are or will amount to is a problem to be solved in the future."
