Count The Birds, Enjoy Fallon's Natural Beauty It's Called Spring Wings Bird Festival And You Are Invited
Every year, when migrating birds flock to the lush wetlands of Nevada’s Lahontan Valley, Fallon hails their arrival with the Spring Wings Bird Festival to celebrate the feathered travelers and other wildlife. Fallon, 61 miles east of Reno, is a rich agricultural, wetlands, and birding area that includes the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, which attracts 280 bird species, 250,000 waterfowl and 20,000 other water birds including American white pelican, double-crested cormorants, white-faced ibis, egrets, herons, gulls and terns. The 10th annual Spring Wings, May 11-13, will feature tours, exhibits, wildlife products, and artwork including wildlife artist Steele Roberts-Ross, who was California Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year. Events also include a play at Fallon’s Barkley Theater about famed marine biologist and zoologist Rachel Carson, best known for her book “Silent Spring,” which alerted the world to the dangers of chemical pesticides and helped to launch the environmental movement. Sponsors include the Fallon Convention and Visitors Authority, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Lahontan Audubon Society, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Nevada Waterfowl Association and many other organizations and businesses.
