.Quickies From Around The Capital: An Interesting Dinner At Governor's Mansion Or, Just Who Was That We Thought We Saw?
If you were strolling along the sidewalk outside the Governor's Mansion recently and thought you were seeing ghosts, don't despair. Now, the idea of ghosts in the mansion certainly isn't a new idea, but having one stroll into the mansion alongside the governor just might be. This is where you ask, who was it?
In the movies he has portrayed Saddam Hussein, and he certainly looks the part. Governor and First Lady, Jim and Dawn Gibbons hosted Jerry Haleva (Saddam) who also works within California state politics and is the owner of a governmental consulting firm called Sergeant Major Associates. What we saw was not the ghost of the Butcher of Baghdad. Haleva was accompanied by General John Abizaid recently retired commander of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in the Middle East and Dr. Tyrus Cobb, a longtime presidential assistant to President Ronald Reagan. The press wasn't invited to this little dinner party so we'll let you decide just how lively the conversation must have been. It's rather doubtful that Harry Potter was even mentioned. General Abizaid commanded CENTCOM from 2003 until March 2007, when he retired from the U.S. Army. Upon retirement, he has chosen to become a Nevadan. The general now lives in Gardnerville, near his childhood home of Coleville, California. Gibbons thanked General Abizaid for his career of service to Americans and congratulated him on his decision to return to northern Nevada. Bice Returns To Private Sector Scott Bice, longtime Nevada Mortgage Lending Commissioner has resigned his position effective at the end of July in order to return to the private sector. Bice will be joining the Town & Country Bank of Las Vegas in order to establish a mortgage lending division. Nevada's cooling off law does not affect Bice's move according to Business and Industry Department Director Mendy Elliot because, she said, "Town & Country is a licensee of the state Financial Institutions Division, not Mortgages Lending." A Change On The Labor Commission Nevada Labor Commissioner Michael Tanchek has appointed Keith Sakelhide as deputy labor commissioner, effective June 18. Sakelhide will oversee operations of the Las Vegas office. Sakelhide, an attorney, is currently the manager of transportation for the state Transportation Services Authority. Sakelhide’s other experience includes appellate and dispute resolution manager for the Employers Insurance Company of Nevada Legal Division; and public defender for Riverside County, CA; as well as employment with the Congressional Research Service and U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC. Sakelhide received a BA in government and public administration from John Jay College and a JD at Hofstra University School of Law. He a member of the State Bars of Nevada, District of Columbia and Pennsylvania, and admitted to practice in United States District Court. State's Mental Health Medical Dir. Resigns Dr. David Rosin is heading to the Big Apple from state service in Las Vegas. Rosin is the Division of Mental Health and Developmental Services medical director and was in charge of establishing or opening the Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Service's new 22-bed psychiatric unit. According to Carlos Brandenburg, the mental health administrator for the state the division is very short handed and getting replacements may jeopardize the opening of the new unit. Rosin came to Nevada Health in 1995 from New York. Homeland Security Chief Retires, Resigns, Quits Lawrence Martines, Governor Jim Gibbons hand picked man to head the state's Homeland Security Department suddenly quit during the first week of July. Martines has a long record in police, security, terrorism work but was not well received by many he had to work with. Martines did not give a reason for leaving.
