Esteban Baca Calderón (1876-29.3.1957) -- b.
at Santa María del Oro, Nayarit; Professor at the Tepic Superior School
(Escuela Superior de Tepic); relocated to the Cananea mines, Sonora in
1904; founder (with Manuel Diéguez) of the Liberal Union of Humanity
(Unión Liberal Humanidad); one of the leaders of the 1906 Cananea
strike; arrested and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment at San Juan de
Ulúa; freed 1911 after Díaz's abdication;
returned to Cananea, established the Liberal Union (with Manuel
Diéguez); supported Diéguez in his
successful campaign for municipal president of that city; joined the
resistance to the February 1913 coup of General Victoriano Huerta;
became a commander (along with Juan José Ríos and Pablo Quiroga) in the
forces led by Diéguez; followed Diéguez in joining Álvaro Obregón's
Northeastern Army Corps of the Sonoran state army; interim Governor of
Colima 24 December 1914-6 January 1915 and 18 March-16 April 1917;
deputy for Jalisco in the Constitutional Convention of 1917; drafted
(with Pastor Rouaix) article 123 of the 1917 Constitution; promoted to
Brigadier General 1917; president of the National Claims Commission;
elected Senator from Jalisco in the National Congress; joined in the
overthrow of President Carranza in 1920; Director General of the
national Customs Department; chief of the purchasing department of the
Army and national railroad system; interim Governor of Nayarit 22
February 1928-27 October 1929; d. 1957 in Mexico City. |
