The economic impact of new and expanding business in northern Nevada represents more than just dollars; it also represents companies and people moving to the area because of life-style and a strong economy. The economic impact in dollars is represented by the number $330 million during the fiscal year 2005-06, just ended. That is a 24-percent increase over the previous year. The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada's (EDAWN) annual business report shows that the $330 million represents 25 new companies, 19 expansions, and two retention projects. The 46 companies generated 1,890 new jobs in the region with manufacturing leading the way. According to the report the majority of new businesses relocated from California. "Northern Nevada and the state have committed to promoting Nevada as a top place to do business and it's paying off," said Chuck Alvey, president and CEO of EDAWN. Alvey went on to say, "We're seeing an increase in companies that pay high wages and greater employee benefits and are having favorable economic impact on our region.
