Start Of Spring Brought Jobs To The Silver State

Economic Picture Continues Bright In The North And The South

When spring finally broke, Nevada's employment picture sharpened, construction projects got underway, and tourists began making their appearance in the north.  Unemployment figures for May as released by the state employment division indicate the state had just four- percent unemployment.  One tenth of a percent better than April.

Weather in the northern tier of counties had coupled with a general slowdown to bring the April figure up from March's 3.8 percent.  Good weather has brought construction jobs, highway jobs, and tourists to the north and increased employment.  In Clark County where weather isn't such a strong factor, the unemployment rate was a strong 3.6 percent in May compared to four percent in April.

Washoe County's unemployment rate was 3.6 percent in May compared to 4.1 percent in April.  California is still suffering high unemployment with their May figure at 4.9 percent while the nation as a whole had a rate of 4.6 percent.

Construction, tourism, and retail positions filled the fastest according to the employment division, and as usual there was an increase in government jobs in the state.
