When Dan DeQuille wrote for the Territorial Enterprise of Virginia City fame, back in the 19th century, he used this depiction of a braying, angry, miner's burro. He always called it, as did most of the prospectors of the day, "A Washoe Canary." Below are some of our brayings, that is, Washoe Canary Songs.

Opinion:
Racism, Bigotry, Call It What You Want, The Correct Word Is Hatred
Those That Promote Hatred Aim For Those Less Educated, Less Intelligent
by Johnny Gunn

Playing on a perception of fear and threat, there is a movement centered in Las Vegas that wants to separate Americans into two groups: White and not-white. The names they use are as ambiguous as their message. Secured Borders USA.com has the least offensive web page but underneath all the calls for closing our borders to illegal immigrants is a subliminal message.

They want only the borders with Hispanic countries closed. There is no mention of illegal immigrants arriving from traditionally white Europe. The organization is a Nevada based non-profit with a mailing address in Las Vegas. Of all the hatred that is spewed on many web-sites today, this is among the least offensive.

Hate mongering bigots have chosen the concept of the illegal immigrant to spew their filth. One has to watch out for how the names are offered on the Internet. One group called Wake Up America, Inc. seems to be a purely religious organization promoting Christianity while a group with a similar sounding name, Wake Up America Foundation is filled with pure hatred.

This group hates any person that is not white, any person that is not Christian, and any person that can't trace ancestry back to Europe and Europe only. At one time there was another group with a similar web site called wake-up-america, but the web site has been discontinued.

A group called the National Vanguard, formerly known as the National Alliance is filled with hatred of Jews, of Hispanics, of Blacks and has joined the parade taking up the cause to stop illegal immigration. There is a southern Nevada tie called the National Vanguard of Las Vegas. This group is dramatically tied to the White People's Party also headquartered in Las Vegas.

This big push by professional bigots to climb on the freight train called anti-immigration, is an opportunity for these less than upstanding people to increase their ranks by pimping themselves to those who are less than educated, less than intelligent. The guy roaring around town in his pickup with fluttering and shredded American flags and a load of empty beer cans in the back is their prime target.

Unfortunately there are groups that are seriously working to curb the influx of illegals entering the country and they are getting a bloody nose from the hate mongers. From the time these shores were first breached by those from Europe, and remember they were not invited by those already here, this country has welcomed newcomers. Most have melded into our society nicely. Some have brought crime and grief with them from the first landing, but those numbers are few.

Those that arrive without legal papers are in danger from those that can have them deported. Some companies and corporations hire illegal immigrants knowing they don't have to pay minimum wage or offer any amenities. If an illegal complains, the INS is notified, and they are sent home. Other illegals get the message quickly. Don't make waves and your job is safe.

There are other problems faced by the illegals, and that comes from phony groups and organizations, usually funded by the companies that hire illegal immigrants, that promise "papers" and legality. The illegals are sold phony Social Security cards, phony driver licenses, and other phony paperwork at high prices.

If major corporations in this country made a sincere effort to not hire those that aren't supposed to be here, few would come. Come they will because there are jobs that pay well. Wal-Mart has been challenged so many times on this issue that it isn't even a news story any more. Chicken producers, meat packing plants, construction firms, and yes, gaming and tourist businesses are all guilty of providing good jobs to people who aren't supposed to be here.

To put up a petition to stop illegal immigration as Secured Borders USA has done doesn't make a lot of sense. They wouldn't be called illegal if it were legal for them to be here in the first place. Duh. In other words the call is for stopping non-white people from coming to this country, legally or otherwise. It is already against the law to enter the country without proper visas.

Before one joins a group because it sounds like they are doing the right thing, put it all together. If you want to help stem the flow of those that come here illegally, help stop the major employers from hiring them. If no jobs were available, they wouldn't come. Don't join one of these groups until you are well aware of what they stand for.

America is a polyglot of colors, ideas, backgrounds, and ethnicity, and the glue that binds us as a nation is opportunity. Make that opportunity available to those that follow the rules, get their visas and green cards legally, and welcome them to family. Don't be fooled into looking like a hypocritical bigot.
