October Sales Figures For 2005 Well Ahead
Of Those From 2004
Possibly The Lead
Up To Holiday Shopping And The Spending Of Those Rebate Checks
The Nevada sales tax figures for October indicate that the Silver State's
economy was still surging forward. The sales tax collected was 9.3 percent
higher than the same period one year ago. The October figures may have been
a bit higher because of the state's $300 million rebate program, but that
can't be proved by any particular means.
October may also have been host to the beginnings of the Christmas
shopping spree along with Halloween sales, and a period of pretty good
weather that allowed for strong tourism. Statewide the mining industry
showed a surge that brought their total sales tax 91.3 percent higher than a
year ago. Some say that because of the rise in the price of gold to more
than $500 per ounce that mines are buying and building. Restaurants and bars
continued to do well across the Silver State as well.
Sales of $3.85 billion brought some $78.5 million into the sate coffers.
Sales tax money goes into education funds, into the general fund, and to
counties. The fiscal year 2005-06 is now four months old and sales tax
collections have increased 12.2 percent over the same period during fiscal
year 2004-05.
Clark County sales were up 7.2 percent in October, and in Washoe County
the increase was 8.3 percent. Esmeralda County was off by 21.7 percent and
neighboring Nye County was off by 2.5 percent.
