| When Dan DeQuille wrote for the Territorial Enterprise of Virginia City fame, back in the 19th century, he used this depiction of a braying, angry, miner's burro. He always called it, as did most of the prospectors of the day, "A Washoe Canary." Below are some of our brayings, that is, Washoe Canary Songs. | |||||||||||||||||||
The Irascible OneA Mixed Bag For ChristmasPolls to be Manipulated --- J.J. Jackson writing on the web site http://www.ConservaTown.com explains how polls in the nation's top newspapers often show their bias by omission. In a New York Times poll, numbers were skewed in order to indicate that George W. Bush was not as honest as most feel he is. The same poll showed that Mr. Bush actually held the confidence of most people. Many of the answers simply didn't make it into print. Example: "Do you think George W. Bush's nominees to the U.S. Supreme court have been more conservative than you would like, not conservative enough, or about right?" More conservative: 25 percent Not conservative enough: 15 percent About Right: 50 percent As Jackson points out, that means that "about 65 percent of those polled felt Mr. Bush's nominees were either about right or not conservative enough." Didn't make it into print for some reason. I wonder why? ••• CNN reporter Showing Bias? Really? --- Now comes a political analyst for CNN who is stumping for a candidate in Nevada's Congressional District 2 race. We saw things like this from CBS during the Election 2004 presidential campaign, but after serious red faces, we really thought that a newsie would stay the hell out of the races. The Irascible One is not a newsie. We are OPINIONATED, and say so right up front. CNN's Paula Begala came to Reno stumping for University Regent Jill Derby in her race for Congress. I guess it goes without saying, CNN reporter (Democrat) campaigning for candidate (Democrat). Begala also worked for Clinton (Bill) and it isn't known if she will work for Clinton (Hilary). And continue to take her CNN paychecks. ••• Is Mr. Heller's Face red? --- After having his staff insist regularly that the Nevada voter registration data base was on schedule and on budget, it took the Clark County Registrar to blow the whistle on Dean Heller's inability to get the project completed. Now there's some suspicion that the budget may have been blown as well. Up till now Heller has been riding a pretty good size curl, but he can put aside the surfboard now. This follows a whole menu of problems in the Secretary's office. He has been unable to get an entire political party to file proper C&E forms, he fouled up the Kathy Augustine affair, and is currently attempting to buy his way into Congress. ••• Real issues not being Discussed --- Danny Tarkanian sent a letter to Ross Miller, one of several candidates looking to replace Heller as SOS, in which he is demanding to know whether Miller supports having people prove who they are at the polls. Tarkanian insists this is the most serious of voter fraud issues and should be at the top of the campaign discussions. For your information Danny, voter fraud is being taken care of by way of the HAVA law that Heller is having so much trouble with. Illegal aliens do not attempt to vote. How about turning your attention to things that are wrong today, such as candidates cheating on their finance reports, or not even bothering to file them. You have name recognition, but you need to have substance. Your primary opponent Brian Scroggins isn't even going along with your sophomoric approach to statewide office. Discuss whether or not the Secretary of State should be able to build a data base for financial reports so they mean something to the voters. Discuss why an entire political party doesn't feel it is necessary to even file those reports. Discuss why election law felonies are not investigated by the chief elections officer. ••• Money! Money! Money! --- Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson has drawn the attention of the big money forces in southern Nevada, and according to some, his coffers may soon be overflowing. He's registered as a Democrat, but he seems to be talking out of the right side of his mouth. If you're fiscally conservative, don't be fooled by any of that. He may oppose abortion but he supports BIG government. So-called kingmaker Billie Vassiliadis claims that Gibson might end up with as much as $2 million to spend for the gubernatorial campaign. Most polls show him trailing Dina Titus in the Democratic Primary to take place in August, and gives him plenty of time to spend big bucks. Titus is a strong political force, but she too has plans for BIG government. Interesting isn't it that only the Republican candidates for governor are discussing tax structure and fiscal responsibility, ••• Ballot Battle Ahead --- Senator Bob Beers is running for Governor and Assemblywoman Sharron Angle is running for Congress, but actually, they are running against each other. The two Republican state legislators are pushing hard for their respective initiative petitions to kick the hell out of run-away taxes in the Silver State. Angle met with supporters in Sun City recently to discuss her Property Tax Restraint Initiative while Beers announced the beginning of his campaign for Tax and Spending Control for Nevada. Both petitions will need more than 83,000 signatures to be put on the General Election ballot in 2006. Both Angle and Beers have considerable support within the Republican party, and have strong support within the independent voters segment of the populace. Don't be surprised if both petitions end up on the ballot. ••• There's a new BLOG in town --- With a load of left leaning ultra liberal blogs making themselves known, particularly from the working press in southern Nevada, it appears there is one for the more conservative minded in Nevada. Check out http://www.BattleBornNews.com. Many different voices in their various columns. Conservative, Libertarian, Independent, you'll probably find something to interest you. ••• Merry Christmas_________________________
