Nye and Esmeralda CountiesHome Sweet Home For Some Proposed In Congress(Washington, D.C.) --- Owning one's property is all but sacred in this country but in Nevada where so much land is either owned or conscripted by the federal government, where deeds to property are clouded by 140 years of disputed mining claims, and simply having three or four generations of family living on a piece of property isn't meaningful sometimes, it's gratifying to find congressional action to help some rural families actually own their property. The tiny little community of Ione in northern Nye County has had disputed ownership for years, and the residents are possibly about to become landowners by congressional action. Another desperately small mining community named Gold Point in southern Esmeralda County is facing the same wonderful action. Many of those living on pieces of property in the two almost ghost towns have been paying property taxes but could be considered federal trespassers. Under a bill introduced in Congress by Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) and Representative Jim Gibbons (R-NV) ownership of the land will be transferred from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to those who have had possession. And there won't be a transfer fee involved. This being federal action there will be paper work involved, but the counties will be the ones to decide who owns what. The Congressional Action involves less than 50 people. In fact there are only seven residents living in Gold Point. Don't look for a post office soon. ••• Washoe CountyTruckee Meadows Water Authority Audit Should Be Complete On Time(Reno) --- Following rate increases by the Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) the 2005 Legislature called for a legislative audit of the quasi-governmental agency. The audit is to be completed by December 31, just a few weeks from now. According to Attorney General spokesperson Nicole Moon, the audit is underway and it is expected to be completed on time. Moon said there won't be any preliminary information released, and nothing will be released "until the process is done and the final report is presented to the Legislature." TMWA was created by Washoe County and the cities of Reno and Sparks to distribute drinking water to the area of northern Nevada previously served by the Sierra Pacific Power Co. water division. As a government agency they are under no obligation to go before the Public Utilities Commission for rate increases or other rate changes. It was what many considered an arbitrary and excessive rate increase that led to the call for a Legislative audit. ••• Hispanic Chamber Of Commerce To Host Entrepreneurship For Minorities Program(Reno) --- The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Northern Nevada along with CitiBank and Wells Fargo Bank will host an Entrepreneurship for Minorities program at the University of Nevada, Reno Ansari Business Building. The free program is designed to help Hispanic business people learn about small business resources, marketing practices, electronic marketing, and most important, how to develop a business plan. Kathy Carrico of the Nevada Small Business Development Center (NSBDC) will coordinate the activities. Programs are scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. on December 10 and run through the lunch hour. There is no cost for the program and lunch is included, but reservations are a must. Contact NSBDC at the University 775-784-1717 or Kathy Carrico, kcc@unr.nevada.edu. ••• White Pine CountyFree Firewood Available Near Ely(Ely) --- In an area called the Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition restoration project west of Ely, area residents are able to harvest firewood for free. The coalition is attempting to return the land about nine miles from town back to an original state, and would like to see many pinion and juniper trees cut down. Snow has been falling in the area so caution is advised if you plan to cut. If you want more information on either the firewood that is available or about the Eastern Nevada Landscape Coalition, call 775-289-7974. •••
