The Buzz Around The Silver Stateas compiled by our correspondents
Douglas CountyNDOT: Killer Intersection May Yet Get Traffic Lights(Minden) --- Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) spokesman Scott Magruder says a meeting to be held on October 15 may make way for traffic signals to be installed at Stephanie Way and Highway 395 north of Minden-Gardnerville. The most recent tragedy to take place at the intersection involved a wreck that claimed the life of Bridget Chambers, a Douglas High School student in July. Petitions have been circulated throughout Douglas County and neighboring Carson City according to Magruder, and they have played a part in getting the project moved along to this situation. There are strict guidelines that must be followed, Magruder said, and it was the petitions that pointed out the danger of having to make left hand turns into oncoming traffic that allowed the criteria to be met. A final decision on the possibility of a traffic signal will be made after NDOT gets public input and has meetings with the Douglas County Commission. The meeting today (October 15) is open to the public. ••• White Pine, Nye, Lincoln CountiesBLM: Public Hearings To Continue Through November(Ely) --- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely Resource Management Plan Draft Environmental Impact Statement public hearings are expected to continue through the month of November. Meetings are scheduled for White Pine, Nye, and Lincoln Counties, part of the Ely District. Normally The Nevada Observer would send you to the BLM web site to say that you can get all the information on the plan, but BLM, this all-powerful federal agency, does not have an operational web site for Nevada. This is shameful considering how much control the agency feels it has over Nevada land. Six public comment meetings are scheduled:
All meetings are scheduled from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The November schedule of public meetings isn't available. Apparently at this time the only way to find out about the Resource Management Plan is to buy a CD from the BLM Ely Field Office at HC 33 Box 22500, Ely, NV 89301-9408. Some public libraries may have copies of the plan to review. Within the BLM Ely District is 11.4 million acres of land your tax dollars help administer, but the agency involved may not want you to know everything they have planned for the area, thus no web site, no general circulation of their plan. ••• Washoe CountyEDAWN Director Nominated To International Council(Reno) --- The nominating committee of the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) has unanimously elected Chuck Alvey, President/CEO of the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) to its board of directors. Alvey will serve a two-year term on the board.
Chuck Alvey Newly elected chair of IEDC, Joseph A. Marinucci said, "It is both an honor and a pleasure to serve on this board and I look forward to working with Chuck Alvey and the other members to provide leadership." Alvey has served as President/CEO of EDAWN since 1998. The goal of EDAWN is to bring new business and technology to northern Nevada. October has been designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Twenty arrests were made on October 11 and 32 arrests were made on October 12 according to the Reno Police Department, which coordinated the program. Two people were arrested on no-bail warrants. ••• Clark CountyCameras In Cabs May Yet Happen, According To AG Opinion(Las Vegas) --- The war over cameras in Taxi Cabs in Clark County isn't over yet, but at least one battle is swinging to the positive side. The Nevada Attorney General's office has issued an opinion that says some limited video and audio surveillance may be legal. Several times the issue has come right up to a point and then stalled in either silliness or stupidity depending on your outlook. The Taxi authority says they will now move forward and draft a regulation that will allow video cameras and some audio devices to be installed in the cabs. At least two major cab companies, Yellow Checker Star Transportation and Whittlesea Bell Transportation, have already installed video cameras in their cabs. The two companies probably are responsible for about half the number of cabs in the county. During all the ins and outs of getting surveillance in cabs some companies had said they wanted the cameras in the cabs as a management tool, not necessarily for the safety of the drivers. During the several years this has been discussed, drivers have been killed by passengers. •••
