Esmeralda CountyGoldfield Days Another Golden SuccessTrains Roll Into Goldfieldby Tom Orzech(Goldfield) --- This years Goldfield Days Celebration was held from the 19th-21st of August. The theme this year was a commemoration of the 1905 Railroad Day Celebration when the first trains rolled into the young mining camp. The weather was fantastic and over 30 venders sold everything from mining antiques to fresh donuts, to Asian specialty food. A highlight of this years activities was a full-scale demonstration of the game of Faro. A long time favorite game of the Old West, this game is no longer offered for play in Nevada and many people were shown for the first time how this game of chance is played. The Saturday parade included several period-dressed walking participants as well as vintage autos and animals. Several politicians showed up to make themselves known and to liven up the discussions! Friday and Saturday evenings ended with street dances with live bands from the local area. The theme for the 2006 Goldfield Days will be a commemoration of the 100th anniversary the famous Gans-Nelson prize fight that was held September 3, 1906. Once called "The Fight of the Century", this fight went 42 rounds with Joe Gans winning after a foul punch by Battling Nelson. Plan on attending the 2006 Goldfield Days, which is scheduled for August 18-20, 2006. Humboldt CountyRockhound Rendezvous Set For McDermittRock And Gem Show Part Of Program(McDermitt) --- This little town 70 miles north of Winnemucca will again host hundreds of rock hounds as they enjoy some of the world's most exciting mineral formations. According to McDermitt resident Illyssa Fogel, "People who rock hound already know about McDermitt. The owner of the Diamond A Motel said, "During the spring and fall they come here all the time. I've seen listings for McDermitt in a lot of rock hounding publications." The second annual McDermitt Rock and Gem Show is scheduled for September 22-25 in various locations around the village. McDermitt sits on the Nevada side of the Nevada/Oregon border, 70 miles north of Winnemucca on Highway 95. Fogel says that dealers will be coming from all over the country offering large selections of agates, jaspers, opals, petrified wood, and other rocks and minerals. "Digs" are also on the menu and spectators will participate in field trips to local sites. For more information go to http://www.winnemucca.nv.us. Douglas CountyHistorical Society To Get Needed Help And MoneyOne Cent Sales Tax Bringing Aid(Minden) --- A one-cent tax could bring needed help to the beleaguered Douglas County Historical Society say those behind the measure, which is scheduled to appear on the 2006 ballot. The money would be used to hire two full-time employees and a part timer. The measure was approved by the Douglas County Commission and voters must approve it as well before it becomes effective. The support will go to the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center and the Genoa Court House Museum. The tax was originally approved by the legislature. According to those promoting the tax measure, none of the money will go for capital improvement. All of the money will be used for employee salaries and exhibits. Currently the Douglas County Historical Society has one part time employee and one part time bookkeeper. The Cultural Center occupies the former Douglas County High School and is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Nye CountyGabbs' Fire Protection Service Endangered - Lack Of TrainingAt The Height Of Fire Season No Less(Gabbs) --- This small mining community at the north end of Nye County is facing a serious problem with its volunteer fire fighting force. The volunteer fire department needs regular training in order to receive some modern equipment, but there is little money and even fewer qualified trainers. The Nye County Commission recently approved an emergency measure to bring a fire/emergency medical coordinator to the community, but officials fear the $10,000 grant is far short of what is needed. As Nevada moves into its traditionally driest months, this isn't the time for a community miles from its nearest neighbors to be without qualified fire fighters and equipment. It's estimated that it will take a minimum of $35,000 to have a training coordinator available for the force. Elko CountyA Shortage Of Workers Plagues Elko CountyThere's Work Available, Officials Say(Elko) --- The mines are continuing to expand in this eastern Nevada county and building of major retail outlets is also putting the crunch on the number of available workers. According to a report issued by the Elko Chamber of Commerce and Great Basin College, employment issues are at the top of the list. Major retail giants Home Depot and Wal-Mart are building new outlets in the community and the mines are hiring as well. Other problems being faced by the community are a continuing housing shortage and local businesses complain of competition from the national chains. The growing pains for Elko will continue for some time Chamber officials say.
