Dawn Gibbons To Join Relief Efforts In Houston
Nevada Group Leaving Tomorrow To Provide Aid

(Reno) -- Former Assemblywoman Dawn Gibbons will be joining a group of volunteers who are delivering supplies to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The group will be leaving Las Vegas on Thursday for Houston with needed items. Once supplies are delivered, the vans will be used to help transport victims to other locations.

The trip was organized by Spread The Word - Kids for Kids, a Nevada non-profit organization, which is collecting the items and donations needed. Volunteers are expected to be gone for one to two weeks and are responsible for their own transportation back to Nevada.

Ms. Gibbons, who has formed an exploratory committee to run for the Congressional seat currently held by her husband, U.S. Representative Jim Gibbons, said that she will suspend her campaign activities until her return. "This is so much more important than politics. This is a time for Americans to pull together and take action to help the families and communities that were devastated," Ms. Gibbons said.

"These people need help, not rhetoric," she continued, adding "I am sure that the events that I had planned to attend can be re-scheduled to a later date. The help needed by hurricane victims is needed now and can't be pushed back."

"By going on this trip, we can help people now and get a first-hand view of what is needed to help these victims meet their future needs," Ms. Gibbons stated. "I have been so proud of how Nevadans have opened up their hearts and wallets to the victims of this disaster. Their compassion and generosity for their fellow Americans is such a blessing.²

While in Houston, volunteers will be assisted by the "Star of Hope" mission, a group that has been providing services for the homeless since 1907.

Last week, Congressman Gibbons left his gubernatorial campaign to return to Washington to attend an emergency session of Congress needed to authorize hurricane relief. Dawn filled in for Jim at the events he missed. In Winnemucca, a kick-off barbeque was turned into a drive to collect donations to the relief effort, and excess food and beverages were donated to the Red Cross.
