Esmeralda County
"Gold Rush Again" Is Slogan For Goldfield Days, August 19-21

(Goldfield) --- Once again Esmeralda County officials will be auctioning off property that is delinquent on the tax rolls, and there's a lot more to Goldfield Days than just a chance to pick up some Central Nevada land on the cheap.

Railroad trains ran through this piece of heaven following the big gold strikes at the turn of the 20th Century, and there will be video presentations to discuss the historical significance of the railroads. The fun over the weekend will be on the streets where one will find live music, street dancing, vendors of food and drink, antiques and memorabilia, and actual stuff from the day. You are required to find other items of consequence, and take tours of an historical nature.

This is a weekend for the camera since Goldfield features significantly historic buildings such as the courthouse, bank, and Goldfield Hotel. There are also panoramas featuring Yucca trees and mine headframes, and of course, there will be the town characters, all of which and whom need their photographs taken.

Go to http://www.geocities.com/goldfieldchamber or http://www.geocities.com/goldfieldhisotricnewsletter for more information. The Chamber of Commerce and the Goldfield Historical Society are sponsoring the weekend. Vendors need to sign up early. Use the Chamber e-mail: goldfieldchamber@yahoo.com or call 775-485-3560 for more information.

Douglas County Continues To Dazzle Those In The World Of Glider Sailing

(Minden) --- Known throughout the world for some of the fairest winds for gliding, Douglas County has now racked up another "talking point." Marta Najfeld has probably broken a world speed record in her PZL-Bielsko glider in the 15-meter class. (Ed. Note: the 15-meters relates to the wingspan of her craft) According to records, she traveled a three-legged course in which no leg can be shorter than 29 percent of the total at 151.5 kilometers per hour. The previous record was 142.4 kph.

Najfeld is a student at Berlin University of Technology and is aware the record isn't official just yet. According to a spokesperson at Minden-Gardnerville Airport, the information on the flight must go to the Soaring Society of America which will then notify the National Aeronautical Association, which will then forward the information to the Federacion Aeronautique Internacionale in Switzerland.

Najfeld said she started flying gliders in 1999. She is also licensed to fliy single and multi-engine aircraft. She looks forward to being a test pilot one day.

Glider enthusiasts come from all over the world to fly out of Douglas County as do hot air balloon pilots. Along the spine of the Pine Nut Range south of Minden and Gardnerville is some of the best air, filled with thermals that give good lift to the engine-less craft.

Reno Gets New Fire Chief: Said "Best Selection For Community"

(Reno) --- City Manager Charles McNeely introduced Reno's new fire chief to the community recently. Paul Wagner who joined the fire service in 1974 comes to Reno from Nebraska and will earn a salary of $125,000.

The Reno fire system incorporates under contract with Washoe County several volunteer departments and what was formerly known as the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District. There are 17 fire stations with about 400 employees.

Wagner will be working with a budget of about $45.4 million to protect lives and property within a 610 square mile area. The Department also is available to help with agencies in outlying areas around Washoe County and western Nevada.

Property Owners Delinquent: Assessor Tax Cap Notices Not Returned By Many

(Reno) --- Washoe County Assessor Bob McGowan sent out 125,000 notices to property owners notifying them of the tax caps put into effect by the Legislature, and asking they be returned notifying him of the type of property they own: primary residence, rental, or some other commercial. Only 75,483 cards have been returned.

The deadline, McGowan said was June 10, but property owners should still send in the cards. The tax assessments will be based on the type of property owned. The cap is on the amount of tax that can be increased, three percent for primary residence or 6.9 percent for commercial.

The Capital (The Silver One)
Richard Bryan Honored With His Own Building Governor; Calls Former Governor "Foremost Figure"

(Carson City) --- On July 14, Governor Kenny Guinn hosted a dedication ceremony naming the new Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Building in honor of Nevada statesman Richard Bryan. The "Bryan Building" is at 901 South Stewart Street in Carson City.

Bryan served as Attorney General, two terms as Governor, and two terms in the U.S. Senate. Guinn referred to him as "One of the foremost political figures of the 20th Century in Nevada."

Among other things Bryan will be remembered as playing instrumental roles in protecting the Galena/Mt. Rose area of Washoe County, and was author of the Southern Nevada Lands Management Act. Bryan also was author of the controversial Black Rock National Conservation Area Act.

Governor Guinn pointed out that Bryan was among the first to speak out against the Yucca Mountain project.
