The Buzz Around The Silver StateAs compiled by our correspondentsDouglas CountyOpen Meeting Law Charges Investigated By Attorney General(Indian Hills) --- Indian Hills General Improvement District Board was investigated by the State Attorney General's office for alleged Open Meeting Law violations, but the AG issued a warning only. A board member had complained that the public has been limited in speaking time for non-agendized items and that public comment is also limited to items requiring a public hearing. In the Attorney General's Opinion, "This is a violation of the open meeting law. If the Indian Hills Board does not comply with this opinion, future litigation by this office may result." Although the board differs in their thought, they don't plan to fight the opinion. According to one board member, it's not worth the fight. The board will make changes to comply with the AG's opinion. ••• The Capital (The Silver One)Railroad Museum offers Fresh Look at Restoration Shop Projects(Carson City) --- One of the highlights of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is its restoration shop. True to historical detail and beautiful to look at, restored pieces make a visit to the museum a pleasurable, educational trip back in time. Restoration Shop Supervisor Chris deWitt will host a special program at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, detailing how historical accuracy, artistry and hard work come together on projects significant to Nevada’s railroading past. With a background in railroad equipment restoration from the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento and Shortline Enterprises, deWitt brings great insight to the problems, pitfalls and occasional surprises encountered when restoring historical equipment. His expertise and artistry are evident in the restored equipment displayed at the museum. His illustrated program includes an update on the 1905 McKeen Motorcar. There are efforts currently underway to have the car listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “The McKeen car continues to provide interesting insights into a different era of engineering and construction,” deWitt said. “Replicating technology as practiced on the plains of Nebraska in 1910 has proved to be a fascinating challenge.” The Nevada State Railroad Museum is celebrating its Silver Anniversary in 2005. Since 1980, the rich railroading heritage of northern Nevada has been kept alive at the museum. Inside its walls is an extraordinary collection of railroad equipment, artifacts and related exhibits that give visitors a first-hand look at the important role played by the world famous V&T Railroad in gaining Nevada distinction as the “Silver State.” A complete schedule of Silver Anniversary events is available online at http://www.nevadaculture.org/ or by calling (775) 687-6953. The museum is located on Route 395 at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and is open daily from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Nevada State Railroad Museum is one of seven managed by the State Division of Museums and History, an agency of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department serves Nevada’s citizens and visitors through cultural and information management, presentation and promotion of cultural resources, and education. The Department also includes the State Office of Historic Preservation, Nevada State Library and Archives, and Nevada Arts Council. Unlike most classic car shows that feature big signs saying don't touch, Davis says, not here. Go ahead and touch, he says. The tour is made up of cars ranging in age from a 1928 roadster to a 1970 Pontiac LeMans, about 50 in all. The vehicles will roll into Ely on June 7. The tour is seriously a tour, with the cars moving about throughout the state. On the 7th, a car show and dinner with the White Pine Rodders Car Club is planned. The tour will hit Carlin, Eureka, Pioche, Las Vegas, Pahrump, Beatty, Rhyolite, Goldfield, Tonopah, and Virginia City. In years past, the tour even spent some time in tiny little Manhattan, NV, high in the Toquima Range of northern Nye County. Besides being allowed to touch these fine and very drivable cars there aren't any awards of any kind to be given out. Unique. According to Davis, participants in the "Tour de Nevada" can join the tour at any point, and leave at any point if they wish. In other words, very few rules and regulations. That means, he says more fun for the participants and spectators. Winter snows are melting and strong thunder boomers are causing the river to be at or near its flood stage. Reports have been received from the Wilson Canyon area, and other parts of the county that the river has overflowed in a few places. At this time there hasn't been any reports of property damage or loss of life although some buildings along the western edge of Yerington have been flooded. Lyon County Sheriff crews with help from search and rescue units and the Lyon County Road Department are working to control the flooding. Reports from other areas of western and northern Nevada also have rivers and streams at or near flood stage including the Humboldt River, particularly near Winnemucca; the Carson River through northern Douglas County; and the Reese River. ••• Washoe CountyBig Plans For Sparks' Victorian Square -- Designs To Be Pedestrian Friendly(Sparks) --- Victorian Avenue in Sparks is one of the highlights of a visit to northern Nevada and the city has more big plans in store, possibly beginning as early as 2006. The city is enjoying its centennial celebration this year with many events taking place along the broad avenue dedicated to the Victorian era. According to plans brought before the Sparks City Council, there will be a three-phase project to include restaurants, townhouses, and high-end businesses. The plans indicate the city hopes to fill in the blank places along the boulevard with homes, shops, restaurants and offices in an atmosphere that will encourage walking about. Another review of the plans is scheduled before the council on June 13. It will be a public hearing. ••• June EDAWN Schedule Released(Reno) --- The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) will have a membership breakfast on June 16 at the Atlantis Hotel Casino. Local education and workforce experts will discuss issues and opportunities facing northern Nevada and the impact on the local business community. A summer social is scheduled for June 30 at the Washoe Steakhouse on West Fourth Street. Members and the public are invited.
