Employment Up, Unemployment Steady According To Latest Figures

Silver State unemployment held a relatively steady 3.9 percent in February according to figures released by the Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation. The Las Vegas unemployment was a steady four-percent while Reno's figure was 4.2 percent. In all, 1.15 million Nevadans were working this February and about 50,000 were unemployed.

Economists generally agree that when figures are that low, it usually means those who want work have it. Nationally, the unemployment figure is a healthy 5.4 percent, and in nearby California, 5.8 percent.

Rural counties such as the Elko/Eureka County unemployment figures are strong as well at four-percent. Nevada's capital came in with a relatively high 5.3 percent unemployment.

New jobs climbed by 6.8 percent from February 2004, a "vibrant economy," according to Governor Kenny Guinn. Despite all the winter snows and rains, construction jobs lead the rosy picture. The Employment agency says there was an increase of 2.9 percent in the total labor force in Nevada during February 2005.

The number of construction workers was estimated at 125,000, an increase of 19 percent, while there were one million service industry workers, up 5.5 percent. Mining employment climbed 11 percent and gaming was up 2.5 percent. In Nevada, the number of government workers climbed from 138,000 to 143,500 from February 2004 to February 2005.
