The Buzz Around The Silver State
As compiled by our correspondents
Douglas County
New Museum And Park In Line For Minden

(Minden) --- Nevada State Parks and Douglas County are working to create the Dangberg Home Ranch Museum and Park along the East Fork of the Carson River. The Dangberg Ranch is one of the most historic sites in Nevada as well as one of the most beautiful areas of the Carson Valley.

The Dangberg Ranch was founded in 1857 well before the discovery of silver on the Comstock, even before Nevada came into being as a Territory. The land for the park was donated to the county as a park site by the last heir of H.F. "Dutch Fred" Dangberg.

The Dangberg family was involved in cattle and sheep ranching as well as forestry and timber cutting when the Comstock Lode was discovered.

The Museum and Ranch may be opened on a limited scale in 2006, and park officials want to see full operation by 2007.

Town Manager Position Open In Historic Genoa, NV

(Genoa) --- This could be the best job available in Nevada right now; Genoa Town Manager. The pay is OK, damn good really, at $36,000 to $49,000 annually, with full bennies. And you get to live at the base of the Sierra Nevada, walk the streets walked by the citizens of the first Nevada community, eat all the candy you can imagine (Genoa Candy Dance!), and oversee town meetings and property.

So far only four people have applied for the position. Current manager Paul Williams will vacate his office on April 22.

Storey County
New Top Cop On The Comstock As Jim Miller Comes Home

(Virginia City) --- Jim Miller was raised in Virginia City, graduated from Virginia City High School in 1968, but like so many moved to other places to seek his destiny. He found his destiny recently when he returned to his beloved Comstock as Storey County Sheriff.

In his travels Miller served with the Legislative Police in Carson City, served as appointed and elected Elko County Sheriff, and was head of security at Nevada's largest mining operation, Newmont Mining Corporation. Newmont is also the world's largest producer of gold.

Miller's father served as Storey County Undersheriff during the Bob DelCarlo reign, and Miller the Younger has been quoted as saying from when he could remember, he wanted to be Storey County Sheriff.

The position came open when Sheriff Pat Whitten resigned to become chief administrator for the small county. Several people were vying for the position and it was Whitten who picked Miller to be his replacement.

Fourth Ward School Restoration Money Offered By Barrick Gold

(Virginia City) --- The venerable Fourth Ward School, now restored as a museum is the recipient of a $50,000 grant from Barrick Goldstrike to continue restoration projects. The Fourth Ward School was built during the boom days of the Comstock and was educational home to thousands of Storey County youngsters during the time.

The Fourth Ward School is open for tourist visits and will host special events as well. Contact the VC Chamber of Commerce for more details.

Barrick Goldstrike is in the midst of building a power plant at the north end of Storey County to provide power for some of its mining operations in central and eastern Nevada. According to BeBe Adams, community relations officer for the company, this is a good way to give back to the community.

The power plant is near the Sierra Pacific Power Company plant at Clark Station, Tracy, along the Truckee River.

Virginia & Truckee RR Has New Engine

(Virginia City) --- A steam engine built in 1914 and "certified to run another 15 years," was purchased by the organization dedicated to rebuilding the Virginia & Truckee Railroad (V&T). Work on the Overman Pit is also progressing, according to the committee.

The engine comes from a tourist line in northern California that has fallen on bad times, and according to engineers at the Nevada Railroad Museum in Carson City, is in excellent condition.

The V&T originally ran from Virginia City to Carson City with spurs later to Reno, and south to Gardnerville. The restoration project is designed to run from Virginia City, 15 miles to Carson City. The roadbed is in pretty good condition with one major problem, that being the Overman Pit. At one time there was a long trestle across the ravine, but an open pit was dug, and a trestle is out of the question according to engineers.

A contract was let recently to Granite Construction Company of Reno to fill the pit and put the rail line across the top. Granite Construction Company has also donated several miles of railroad track that was taken up in Reno in order for the Reno Train Trench to be constructed.

Conviction, Fine Of Former Lander County Top Cop Confirmed By US Court Of Appeals

(San Francisco, CA) --- Michael Kranovich served as Carlin Police Chief and as elected Sheriff of Lander County, but right now, he's considered a federal prisoner following a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision. Kranovich was accused of stealing federal funds while in office and using the money for personal needs.

Kranovich was elected Lander County Sheriff in 1998. He was initially indicted on the federal charges in July of 2002 and a federal jury in Reno found him guilty. He has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and charged $12,500 in restitution funds.

State charges are still pending for the former lawman in Lander County, and trial is scheduled to begin in June. According to the State investigations division, there are discrepancies in the Lander County Sheriff Department budget during the Kranovich term.

Garnet Mercantile Fully Funded Economic Asset To County

(Ely) --- The Community Owned Mercantile Project (COMP) is fully funded according to a report from the board of directors. The organization behind the opening of the Garnet Mercantile, a community owned general merchandise store in downtown Ely, was looking for subscriptions in the amount of $400,000 to complete their project. Almost $500,000 worth of stock was sold and the store opened for business during the Christmas Holidays.

According to representatives of the company, business has been brisk and should stay that way. The Garnet Mercantile replaced a J.C. Penney store that had been in Ely for 90 years. It is the only general merchandise store in White Pine County.

The Capital (The Silver One)
Sarah Winnemucca To Be Permanent Carson City Resident

(Carson City) --- A statue of Sarah Winnemucca, daughter of Chief Truckee, grand daughter of Chief Winnemucca, and the first Native American to have written a book published in this country, has been erected in the national hall of statuary in Washington, D.C., and now a replica of that statue will grace the Nevada State Capitol, according to Governor Kenny Guinn. On April 6 the governor and his wife will host a dedication ceremony beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Dignitaries from the Paiute Nation, and state and federal officials will be on hand for the ceremony. Drummers and dancers are expected to perform in the reception lobby of the Nevada State Library and Archives building. The dedication ceremony is free and open to the public, but reservations are suggested. Call 775-684-3313 to RSVP.

Sculptor Benjamin Victor will be on hand for the celebration. Department of Cultural Affairs Interim Director Scott Sisco says, "This is one of the most significant cultural events we've been involved in since I joined the department back in 1998." Sisco went on to say, "The Department is honored to have been a part of this project."

Victor's work has been praised, both in the nation's capital as well as in Carson City. He said a full sized replica of the D.C. work will be installed in the state's capitol, and a smaller 36-inch replica will be installed in the Grant Sawyer State Building in Las Vegas.

(Carson City) --- An open house and artist's reception will take place April 7 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in the capital city. An exhibit titled Shadows of the V&T by artist Loren Jahn will run through September of this year.

Nevada's railroad museum is the largest in the state and is open daily for tours and visitors. There is a charge to see the museum, but the artist's reception and open house is free.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad (V&T) ran from Virginia City to Carson City, and later had spurs to Reno and south to Gardnerville. There was a connection at Mound House with the Carson and Colorado Railroad (C&C). The V&T was a standard gauge short line while the C&C was narrow gauge.
